1. Microbiology Laboratory Design The microbiology laboratory comprises a preparation room, a washing room, an autoclaving room, a sterile room, a temperature-controlled training room, and a general laboratory. A common feature of these rooms is the smooth finish of their floors and walls, as well as furniture and equipment that are easy to clean.

2. Basic requirements for a microbiology laboratory: The preparation room is used for preparing culture media and processing samples.
3. The washroom is used for washing hands and utensils. Since the equipment used may be contaminated with microorganisms, pathogenic microbes can sometimes be present. Therefore, when conditions permit, a washroom should be provided. It should include a heater, a steamer, basins, and buckets for handwashing, as well as various bottle brushes, scouring powders, soap, laundry detergent, and other supplies. The sterilization room is primarily used for sterilizing culture media and various laboratory instruments. It should be equipped with an autoclave, an oven, and other sterilization equipment and facilities.
4. The aseptic chamber, also known as the inoculation room, is a specialized laboratory used for systematic bacterial inoculation and purification. In microbiology, bacterial inoculation and propagation constitute the primary procedures. These operations require pure cultures to prevent contamination. Given that ambient air contains abundant particulate matter and mixed microorganisms, it can readily lead to contamination and interfere with inoculation work; therefore, an aseptic chamber should be established in accordance with both economic and scientific principles.
5. There should be two rooms: an inner sterile room and an outer buffer room. The volume of the rooms should not be excessive, as this would hinder air sterilization. The inner area should be 22.5 m², with a floor space of 5 m²; the outer area should be 12 m², with a floor space of 2 m². The ceiling height should be less than 2.5 m. The interior layout should minimize air turbulence. The inner door should be positioned at a specified distance from the workbench, while the outer door, which is also a sliding door, should be located at a designated distance from the inner door.
6. A small window should be installed in the wall, or a “partition fan” should be placed between the interior and exterior spaces. The window should measure 60 cm wide, 40 cm high, and 30 cm thick; the sterilization chamber is compact and tightly sealed. Over time, the internal temperature can rise significantly, so ventilation must be provided. The chamber’s window should be positioned in the ceiling of the inner compartment—away from the workbench. Prior to sterilization, the chamber window may be opened to circulate air. If feasible, a constant‑temperature, constant‑humidity unit can be installed.
7. The aseptic chamber, regardless of its materials or intended use, must have smooth surfaces and level floors. Both the inner and outer chambers are equipped with ultraviolet lamps (typically 30 W). In the inner chamber, the UV lamp should be mounted directly above the workstations, at a height of 2 meters from the floor. In the outer chamber, the UV lamp may be installed in the center. The outer chamber must be furnished with dedicated workwear, shoes, caps, masks, porcelain dishes, towels, mats, and a handheld sprayer, along with a 5% carbonic acid solution.
